look ma, no cavities!

Some firsts that have happened this week:
- First dentist appointment for both the kids. I'm pleased to report that both kids behaved remarkably and neither have any cavities!
- First real haircut for Ab. She loved it - had the hairwash, style, and whole nine yards!!! Ask her to see the photo...
- First piece of gum (successfully chewed and not swallowed!!) for Ab. She has decided that even though mint flavour is still hot, she likes it now.

It's pretty amazing to be present for firsts. Afterall, they only happen once. Experiencing things with little people that you love is priceless.

Max at 5

It was Max's 5th birthday on the 1st of September. He's had 5 years to become a unique little person, and he's done a fantastic job.

At 5, Max can outplay his mother on Super Mario. He can pick up an early reading book and read it. He can colour in the lines when he tries hard. He can ride a bike, climb any rock, and run like the wind. He bakes a mean muffin, asks for help when he needs it, and is generally a pretty sweet boy. He plays with his sister for hours, charms every adult he meets, and gives the best snuggles ever on the couch.

He works twice as hard as most kids because of his autism, but gets twice the rewards from his efforts.

He is five now, going on 'grown-up'. Crazy.

things my kids can do

Max can read. Really, really read. It's pretty darn cool and I didn't see it coming.

Abby can pump a swing. She gets that look on her face as if she's flying. It's amazing to see.

Max can ride a bike. And he rides fast and far. He can even brake now, too!!!

Abby rides a scooter like a pro. She sometimes falls, but my big girl gets back up, and we only have to carry the scooter home half the time now!

They can play outside together for hours. Without adult accompaniment. Making and guiding their own fun.

How is it that if you blink, your kids grow up?!
